Kansai Airport Ritual: Last Bites of Japan Before Hanoi

Eleven in the morning and the terminal hums the way airports do when no one is in a hurry yet. I buy the bento from a counter near the Nankai line entrance, the kind with little compartments, rice here, pickled something there, a piece of fish shaped like it was never alive. There is a logic to the packaging I will miss in Hanoi, where food arrives loose and generous and nothing stays in its place.

The matcha Kit-Kat goes in my jacket pocket, not the bag. Saved for later, for the exact moment the plane levels off and the seatbelt sign turns quiet. This is a ritual now, has been for months. Something small and sweet to mark the border between one country and the next.

I think about the last three weeks here, the trains that left on the minute, the way strangers bowed slightly even through glass doors. Japan does not ask you to love it loudly. It just keeps the floors clean and the bento perfect and lets you decide for yourself how you feel.

The camera stays zipped for now. Some moments are just mine, no frame needed, just the smell of rice vinegar and the announcement board clicking over to the next gate. Tchau for now, Osaka. Hanoi will be louder, hotter, a different kind of honest. I am ready for both kinds.

If you go: eat the bento before boarding, buy the matcha Kit-Kat at the Lawson past security, it travels better than you think.
