Hanoi, the first roll still sealed

I land in Hanoi at the end of October, with one bag, one camera, and more film than is sensible. Ten days. I am told the motorbikes are the first thing you learn and the last thing you understand. I plan to cross the street the way locals do: slowly, steadily, without changing my mind halfway.

My plan is mostly mornings. Hoan Kiem Lake at sunrise, when the city does tai chi and badminton along the water. The Old Quarter before the shutters go up. Street food on low plastic stools, which I hear are lower than my knees would like.

Field notes · Hanoi
  1. Around Hoan Kiem Lake, locals exercise from about 5:30 to 7 am, the best window for candid photographs in soft light.
  2. Late October to December is one of the most comfortable times in Hanoi, with drier air and milder temperatures than summer.
  3. Eat pho for breakfast and bun cha at lunch from busy street stalls, where high turnover keeps everything fresh.
  4. Cross streets at a steady walking pace without stopping suddenly, explore the Old Quarter on foot, and ask before photographing people up close.
