First Hour in Seville: Dusk at the Giralda on Film

Woman with leather duffel standing in the plaza below the Giralda tower in Seville, warm golden dusk light on sandstone, cathedral facade in background.

The bag is still on my shoulder when I see her. The Giralda, catching the last of the light like she’s been waiting all day for exactly this hour. Somewhere behind me a man is closing his shutters, the metal sound sharp and final, and the air smells of orange trees and hot stone cooling down. Seville does not rush this part. Neither do I.

I put the duffel down on the steps of the plaza and just look for a while. That’s the whole plan. Look, then figure out where to sleep. The tower is taller than I imagined, taller than the photographs let on, and quieter, too. No crowds pushing for the angle yet. Just a few pigeons negotiating the ledge and a woman selling fans she isn’t selling to anyone. The bells stay silent. I keep waiting for them, the way you wait for a line in a film you already know.

I load the Contax without thinking about it, muscle memory more than decision. There’s a comfort in doing something with your hands when a new city is still deciding what it thinks of you. Click. The shutter sound is small against all that stone, almost embarrassed to interrupt. First frame in a new place always feels like a bet: you don’t know yet if the light will hold, if this will be the one you keep or the one you forget in a drawer for years.

An old man on the bench nearby asks if I’m lost. I tell him no, just arrived. He nods like that explains everything, which, pois é, maybe it does. First hour anywhere is its own small country. You don’t speak the language yet. You just watch how people move, what they carry, whether they look up at the tower the way I do or walk past her like she’s furniture. Most walk past. I don’t blame them. You can’t be struck every day by something you pass every day.

The sky goes from orange to that flat blue that isn’t quite night. Somewhere a door opens and there’s flamenco guitar, faint, maybe a bar rehearsing for later. I stay until the tower is just a shape against the dark, until the last of the tourists have gone for tapas and the pigeons have settled. Then I pick up the duffel, sling the camera back over my shoulder, and go find a room. Seville hasn’t said much yet. Neither have I. Feels like the right way to start.
