Early Morning in the Alhambra: Alone in the Nasrid Palaces

Intricate Islamic stucco ceiling and marble columns in the Court of the Lions at the Alhambra, soft morning light filtering through lattice windows.

Six a.m. entry, because that is the only way to get the Nasrid Palaces without three hundred strangers in your photos. I did not expect the cold. Granada in the early hours has a bite to it, even in a season that should know better. I keep my jacket on until the sun finds the courtyards.

The ticket woman barely looks at me. Inside, the silence is the kind you can hear. My boots on stone, too loud. I slow down without meaning to.

The ceilings here were built by men who understood patience in a way I am still learning. Muqarnas stacked like frozen honeycomb, each cell catching a different degree of shadow. Someone spent a life on this. Not a metaphor, an actual life, hours folded into hours, carved into plaster that has outlasted every sultan who walked under it. I stand there with my neck craned back and my camera hanging, forgetting to lift it.

The Court of the Lions empties itself out for me, just for a moment. Water moves through the channels with a sound so small you have to stop breathing to catch it. Twelve stone lions, worn soft at the edges by five centuries of weather and hands. I count my own footsteps to see how far I get before another visitor arrives. Forty, maybe forty-five. Not long. Long enough.

The light does what the caption already told you. Comes through the lattice, lands on marble like it has walked this route before, like it knows exactly which tile has been waiting for it. I think about my father, who took me to see the Duomo when I was young and told me to look up more than I looked at my phone. Different country, same instruction. Some habits get built early and never leave.

I load a new roll before I know I need it. The Leica clicks once, twice, and I let the rest of the visit happen without it. Not every second needs proof. Saudade is a word for missing something before it is even gone, and I feel it standing there, already grieving the moment I am still inside of.

By eight the tour groups arrive, guides holding up umbrellas like flags, and the palace becomes a different place entirely. I do not resent them. I just already have what I came for.
