Dry Bridge Flea Market, Tbilisi: Soviet Relics at Midday

Noon at the Dry Bridge and the sun is doing that flat, heavy thing it does in Tbilisi in summer, no shade to speak of. The blankets go on for what feels like a city block. Medals with ribbons faded to the color of weak tea. A porcelain shepherdess missing one hand. Cameras that stopped working before I was born, still arranged like they might take one more photo if you asked nicely.

The seller behind the medals doesn't look up. He has a newspaper folded into quarters, the way my nonno used to fold his, and he's three pages deep in something that matters more to him right now than whatever I'm about to buy or not buy. I respect that. Nobody here performs for you. There's no pitch, no reaching over to press a thing into your hand. You look, you crouch, you decide, or you don't.

What gets me is the clutter of it, the sheer unsorted weight of a whole political century sitting on a bedsheet in the dirt. A hammer and sickle pin next to a Orthodox icon next to a Nokia phone from 2003. Nothing curated. Nothing telling you what it means. Just objects that survived, waiting for someone to decide they're worth carrying home.

I pick up an old rangefinder, no strap, glass cloudy at the edges. It won't work, I already know. I put it down next to my own camera, the two of them looking at each other for a second like strangers at a funeral. Saudade, maybe, for something I never owned in the first place.

I don't buy anything. I sit on an overturned crate near the edge of the tables and watch the foot traffic, tourists moving in one direction, locals cutting through in another, everyone reading the same objects differently. The newspaper man turns a page. Somewhere behind me someone is negotiating over a spoon. This is Tbilisi at 12:41, unbothered, cluttered, and completely unconcerned with whether I understand any of it.
