Zazen at Kennin-ji: A Still Morning in Kyoto's Oldest Zen

11:04 and my legs have gone past aching into something more honest. The tatami smells faintly of straw and old wood, the kind of smell that doesn't photograph but you remember it anyway. Kennin-ji is Kyoto's oldest Zen temple, they tell me, though this morning it doesn't feel old. It feels like it's happening for the first time, every time someone sits down.

The shoji screen is open just enough. Outside, the raked gravel garden holds its lines like someone drew them an hour ago and walked away satisfied. No wind to disturb them yet. A monk somewhere behind me adjusts his robe, the fabric making a sound like paper. Nobody speaks. The silence here isn't empty, it's furnished, every creak of the floorboards part of the room.

I keep my camera beside me on the tatami, unused. Some mornings it watches instead of works. There's a kind of discipline in that too, in letting a moment pass through you without trying to keep it. My father used to say pazienza like it was a prayer. My mother would've already fallen asleep sitting up, and laughed about it after.

Somewhere around minute twenty my knees stop being the main event. The breath takes over, slow and unimpressive, in through the nose, out through something that isn't quite a sigh. The garden doesn't change. I do, slightly. Is that the point? Nobody here is going to tell me. They just ring the bell when it's time, and the room exhales together, like it's been holding something the whole hour without knowing it.
