Kyoto, before the temples wake up
Kyoto is a city of very early mornings. I went up Fushimi Inari at dawn three times, because the first time I stopped too soon. The lower gates are crowded by eight. Higher up the mountain the vermilion tunnels go quiet, and the only sounds are your own shoes and a shrine cat with somewhere to be.
I sat zazen at Kennin-ji, badly, with a sore knee and a clear head. I spent a rainy afternoon over matcha in a tea house, walked the Philosopher's Path along the canal, and stood in the Arashiyama bamboo grove at dusk as the day crowd thinned. At night, Pontocho under lanterns, and a kaiseki dinner at a hinoki counter where each dish arrived like a small, careful decision.
