Six fifty-five and the city hasn't caught up yet. I walk in under the torii and the sound changes before anything else does, traffic gone, replaced by something closer to nothing. Gravel underfoot, that specific crunch, loud in a way it wouldn't be at noon.
The cedars here are old enough to have opinions. Mist sits low between them, not moving much, just hanging around like it has nowhere better to be. Neither do I. The sake barrels are stacked along the path, painted labels facing out, an offering nobody is watching me look at.
I think about how Tokyo gets called loud, neon, vending machines on every corner, and all of that is true somewhere else in the city. But here, at this hour, it keeps a different kind of time. Sacred-quiet, if that's a thing you can hang in the air. My father used to say certain churches in Milan had this same weight, the sense that the building is older than your worries and doesn't care to hear them.
No one else on the path. Just me, the camera, and whatever bird is testing its voice somewhere in the canopy. I load film slower than I need to, partly ritual, partly stalling, because once I shoot the frame the morning starts moving forward again. Saudade for something I haven't left yet, that's the closest I can get to naming it.
By eight this will be full of tour groups and selfie sticks and a very reasonable amount of noise. Right now it's just gravel, mist, barrels, and the sound of my own steps. I'll take that trade every time.
