There is a moment just after nine when the tour groups have not yet arrived and the Acropolis belongs to the stone. I mean that literally. No voices, no shuffling sneakers, just the low hum of the city below and the columns catching the first real warmth of the day. The marble turns this color I have no word for. Not white, not gold. Something the film will have to figure out for me.
I set up on the south side where the scaffolding frames the columns like a second architecture, modern and temporary, holding something ancient in place. It should look ugly. It doesn't. It looks like care. The air smells like dust and dry herbs from somewhere below, rosemary maybe, carried up on a breeze that barely qualifies as wind. I can hear a dog barking in Plaka. A motorbike. Then nothing again.
My father took me to the Colosseum when I was seven and I cried because I thought it was broken. He knelt down and said, no, it's just old, like Nonna's hands. I think about that every time I stand in front of something that has outlived every person who built it. The Parthenon is not broken. It is not even tired. It just stands there with the patience of something that has already seen everything and decided to stay anyway.
I shot four frames. Maybe five. The Leica was warm in my hands from the sun. I sat on a low wall and did nothing for a while, which is the whole point of coming early, of coming alone. Athens does not need you to feel something grand. It just needs you to show up before the crowds and sit still long enough to notice that the light is doing all the work.
