The Venetian walls in Rethymno don't end so much as dissolve into the town. You walk along them and at some point the stone under your hand becomes a doorframe, then a restaurant, then someone's laundry line. The separation between ruin and daily life here is so thin it barely exists. I like that. I like places that wear their centuries without performing them.
By nine the light is nearly gone but not completely. There's a blue left in the sky that film loves, that deep grain-hungry blue you can't fake with a filter. I shot three frames from the top of the wall looking toward the lighthouse, the harbor water flat and dark below, a single fishing boat still tied up. The camera clicked and the sound carried. It's that quiet. You hear your own shutter here.
I found a bar with four tables on the stone, right where the wall meets the water. No menu, just raki and a small plate of something with honey and sesame. The woman who brought it didn't say much. She set the glass down and went back inside. I put my feet up on the harbor wall and watched the lighthouse do nothing. It's a Venetian lighthouse, which means it has outlasted several empires by simply staying put. There's a lesson in that, probably, but I'm too comfortable to reach for it.
Somewhere behind me a couple is speaking Greek too fast for me to follow. A cat crossed the top of the wall, paused, considered me, moved on. The raki is sharp and warm. Crete doesn't try to charm you the way the Cycladic islands do, all white and blue and ready for the photo. Crete just sits there, old and dry and unhurried, and waits for you to adjust your pace. Devagar. I'm adjusting.
