Early Morning at the Acropolis: Athens Before the Crowds

acropolis athens morning: Woman sitting on a weathered marble block near the Parthenon at the Acropolis in Athens, low golden

There is a specific minute when the Acropolis belongs to no one. The gates have opened, the guards have stepped aside, and the first tour groups are still finishing hotel breakfasts somewhere below in Plaka. I walked up the path alone except for a few cats and one man in a linen shirt who looked like he'd been awake since four. The marble was cool under my hand when I touched the low wall. Not cold. Cool, the way old stone holds the night a little longer than everything else.

The Parthenon in direct morning light does something I wasn't prepared for. It isn't golden, not exactly. It's the color of strong tea poured over something white. The columns throw shadows that stretch all the way to where I'm sitting, and the shadows have weight to them, actual presence on the ground. I loaded a fresh roll and then just held the camera in my lap. Sometimes the photograph can wait. Sometimes the looking is the point.

Below, Athens spread out in every direction, low and pale and loud even from up here. Horns. A dog. Music from a radio that someone left on a balcony. The smell was dry herbs and warm dust, and underneath that, something faintly sweet, like the jasmine I'd walked through near the entrance. I thought about my mother's courtyard in Sao Paulo, how she grows jasmine along the wall and how it smells strongest right before the rain. Funny, what distance does. You sit on a rock in Greece and your nose takes you to Brazil.

I wrote three words in my notebook. Pedra, luz, silêncio. Then I closed it and just sat with the scale of the thing. Twenty-five centuries of people climbing this hill to look at these columns and feel small in a way that doesn't hurt. The crowds will come. They always do. But right now the only sound is my pen cap clicking and the wind doing something unnecessary and beautiful to the Greek flag on the far side of the hill. I have nowhere to be. That's the whole trick.
