Blue Hour in Cinque Terre: Sciacchetrà Wine on a Terrace

cinque terre blue hour: Glass of amber Sciacchetrà dessert wine on a candlelit terrace in Cinque Terre at blue hour, terraced
Sofia Costa · 35mm№114 → Italy

There is a point in the evening when the sea stops being blue and starts being something else. Navy, maybe. Ink. It happens fast here. The terraced vineyards on the hillside lose their green and fold into silhouettes, and then it is just shapes. The geometry of labor, all those stone walls built by hand centuries ago, becoming a single dark slope.

The Sciacchetrà is local, almost impossibly so. Made from grapes dried on these hills, in quantities so small the waiter told me they barely export any. It tastes like raisins and apricot and something mineral underneath, like the rock the vines cling to. I hold it up to the candle and the wine goes amber, almost copper. It is the kind of thing you cannot rush. The woman at the next table is doing the same thing, turning her glass slowly. We don’t speak. We don’t need to.

A candle on a table outdoors is a stubborn, optimistic thing. The breeze off the water keeps threatening it. It flickers, recovers, flickers again. I find myself watching it the way you watch a fire, without thinking. Somewhere below the terrace a motorino whines up a switchback and fades. Somewhere a door closes. The sounds of a town pulling inward for the night.

I loaded the last roll of Portra this morning and I have maybe four frames left. I could use one here. The candle, the glass, the navy nothing beyond the railing. But sometimes the camera stays in the bag. Sometimes you just sit with it, the whole thing, the sweetness on your tongue and the salt air and the hill going dark frame by frame without you pressing a thing. Basta così.
