Twenty-one forty and the crossing fills again. It empties, it fills. From up here it looks less like a street and more like a held breath, released on a loop every two minutes.
The rain stopped an hour ago but the ground hasn't heard yet. Every screen above me is doubled in the asphalt, so the city argues with itself in reflection, neon pink against neon blue, a woman selling something twelve feet tall blinking next to her own drowned copy. Someone's umbrella is still open. Nobody looks up.
I load the last frame in the Nikon and don't take the shot right away. There's a version of this moment where I count the people, try to find one face to follow through the crowd. Tonight I let them all go instead. That's the trick of Shibuya, nessuno is the subject and everyone is. The chaos isn't a bug, it's the whole photograph.
Somewhere below, a bell from a convenience store door. Wet rubber soles on stone. A language I don't speak wrapping around me in fragments, kind in tone even when I can't follow the words. I think about how many times this exact intersection has been photographed, how it barely matters, how it still asks something new of you each time you stand over it.
My legs are tired from the day and the hotel is twenty minutes on foot, but I stay another ten. The city doesn't wait for you to catch up. Tokyo at night has no patience for stillness, and maybe that's why I keep coming back to this rail, this exact spot above the scramble, camera loaded, hands cold, watching everyone arrive and disappear at the same time.
