Abanotubani Sulfur Baths: A Steaming Morning in Tbilisi

tbilisi sulfur baths morning: Brick domed rooftops of Tbilisi's sulfur bathhouses steaming in cool morning air, Narikala fort
Sofia Costa · 35mm№192 → Georgia

Eleven-forty and the domes are still breathing. That's the only way to describe it, steam curling off the brick roofs of Abanotubani like the whole neighborhood just woke up from something ancient. The air smells of sulfur, faint, mineral, not unpleasant once you stop expecting it to be.

I stand on the bridge above the bathhouses and just watch. No one else is out yet, or maybe they are and I don't notice them, because the domes hold your attention the way a fire does. Narikala fortress sits on the cliff behind, half swallowed by morning haze, the kind of haze that burns off by noon but for now softens every edge.

Someone told me these baths have been running since before the city had a name worth remembering. I believe it. There's a stillness here that doesn't come from tourism schedules or opening hours. It comes from centuries of people doing the exact same thing I'm doing right now: standing still, letting the steam do whatever steam does to a person's shoulders.

My camera stays in the bag longer than usual. Some mornings you just look. Then, almost apologetically, I lift it, one frame, the domes low and round against the cliff line, no figures, nothing posed. Tranquillo. The shutter sounds too loud for how quiet everything else is.

I think about how a bathhouse is really just a room built around the idea of slowing down. Somebody dug this up from the ground centuries ago and decided the heat was worth keeping. Tbilisi agreed and never really argued the point since.

I'll come back later, maybe tonight, and go inside properly, sulfur water up to my chin, the domes overhead instead of in front of me. For now this is enough: the steam, the stone, the fortress standing guard over something it clearly isn't worried about losing.
