Derinkuyu Underground City at Dusk: Cappadocia's Hidden World

derinkuyu underground city: Woman descending a narrow carved tunnel in Derinkuyu underground city, warm lamplight on tufa sto

The stairs here weren't made for anyone my height. I duck, I turn sideways, I keep going down. Somewhere around the fourth level I stop counting and just listen. Water dripping somewhere I can't see. My own breath, slower than I expect.

Derinkuyu goes eighteen storeys into the earth, though tourists only get to wander the top eight. Stables, wine presses, a chapel, a room that was probably a kitchen because the ceiling is still black with old smoke. Thousands of people lived down here once, whole seasons, hiding from armies that never thought to look beneath their own feet. Eighteen storeys of patience.

The air changes as you descend. Warmer at the surface, then a cool that has nothing to do with weather, it's mineral, ancient, like the inside of a stone that's been quiet for a thousand years. My camera struggles with the lamplight, the yellow pools against grey tufa, but I shoot anyway. Some things you photograph knowing the film won't get it right, and you do it anyway because being wrong here still means something.

A guide mentions the ventilation shafts, more than fifty of them, dug by hand, some over seventy metres deep. I think about the person who first thought: we could live down here. Not as a metaphor. Literally, stone by stone, an entire underground town so their children could sleep through a siege.

It's 20:02 and somewhere above me Cappadocia is turning that pink-orange color the postcards love, but I'm not up there for it. I'm here, in a hallway carved by hands that had no headlamps, no permits, no reason to believe they'd succeed. Coragem, my mother would say. Or maybe just fear, organized into architecture.

I surface later, slightly disoriented, the way you do coming out of a cinema in daylight. The world above feels loud and unnecessary for a minute. Then it doesn't. Then it's just Cappadocia again, dust and hot bread smell and someone calling their kid in for dinner, and I think: they built a whole civilization to survive, and I can't survive an afternoon without my camera.
