Lisbon, slowly, one hill at a time

Lisbon is a city you climb before you understand it. I started in Alfama, early, when the laundry was already out and the only traffic was a man carrying bread up a staircase. The streets fold into each other and then double back. My map gave up first. My legs followed around noon.

Most of what I shot here is small. A wall of tiles that has been cracking politely for two hundred years. Half a pastel de nata, because the other half was gone before I thought of the camera. The light off the Tagus does most of the work. It is soft and milky in the morning, gold late in the afternoon, and kind to anyone who stops walking for a minute and lets the city come to them.

Field notes · Lisbon
  1. Walk Alfama between 7 and 9 am, before the 28 tram and tour groups fill it, and shoot down toward the river from Miradouro de Santa Luzia.
  2. For late light, Miradouro da Senhora do Monte in Graça looks over the castle and Baixa, and is usually quieter than São Pedro de Alcântara.
  3. Eat pastéis de nata warm from a bakery counter, and grilled sardines at a neighborhood tasca, best in June during the Santo António festivities.
  4. Give Lisbon four days on foot, load a Viva Viagem card for trams, metro and the funiculars, and wear shoes with grip for the polished cobbles.

These stairs have been wearing the same tiles for two hundred years. The light touches them like it remembers. I just hold the camera still and let morning do the rest. #sofiacostafilm #sofiacosta #alfama #lisbon #portugal #35mm #filmphotography #slowtravel #saudade #filmlook #unposed
