Dinner in Ravello: A Clifftop Table on the Amalfi Coast

There is a specific hour in Ravello when the light gives up trying and the candles take over. Eight forty-three, if you want to be exact. The tablecloth was linen, not cotton, you can tell by the weight of it under your wrists. The plate arrived without ceremony. Red mullet, whole, skin crisped, a few capers, a lemon half wrapped in gauze so the seeds stay put. The kind of detail that tells you someone here has been doing this for decades and does not need your review.

The waiter was old in the way that Italian men in small clifftop towns are old. Unhurried. He poured the wine at an angle that suggested he had opinions about it but would not share them unless asked. I did not ask. Some silences are generous like that. Below the terrace, the Tyrrhenian was doing its thing, which at this hour means disappearing into itself, just a dark plane with fishing boats marked by faint lights. Positano somewhere to the left, a little cluster of orange. Distant enough to feel like someone else's evening.

I thought about my father. He would order the same fish, then spend ten minutes removing every bone with surgical focus before eating a single bite. I never had that patience. I still don't. But tonight I tried, and the slowness changed the taste of it somehow, or maybe that was the wine, a local white, fiano probably, cold and a little salty the way coastal wines sometimes are. The camera sat on the chair beside me. I shot one frame earlier when the candle caught the glass. One frame felt like enough.

Ravello is not the Amalfi Coast that people photograph from boats. It sits above all of that, removed, a town that chose altitude over access. You earn it with the switchbacks. And then you sit, and the sea is below you instead of beside you, and the distance does something to your breathing. Slower. Wider. The couple two tables over spoke in low French. A cat appeared and then didn't. The waiter brought a plate of lemon sorbet I had not ordered. He set it down and walked away. I understood.
